So, I’m going back on what I said in my last post. I actually do have a few books that I could part with…especially if it means I get some new (to me) books. Basically, that’s what Bookmooch is all about: I list books I’m willing to give away and I make a wishlist of books I’d like to get. BookMooch is a community for exchanging used books. And, so far, it seems to be working. I have received and given away several books without a hitch. How cool is that?

I love books. Of course, I love to read books, but I also love the feel of books and the aesthetic of how they look stacked here and there, in shelves, in baskets, on my nightstand. I have a lot of books. I have so many books that I had to get a storage unit to hold some of them. I would rather pay to store my books than part with them. I’m silly that way. So when I stumbled across LibraryThing I was excited to see a Web 2.0 (whatever) social-networking site pop up that actually has some value for me. ‘Course I’ll never in a million years have the time to enter all my books (even with the obligatory bookmarklet), but it is interesting to see what other people have in their libraries and our interested in discussing. If you’re a bookworm, I suggest you give LibraryThing a whirl. You can catalog up to 200 books with a free account or upgrade to a paid account to catalog any number of books. Paid personal accounts cost $10 for a year or $25 for a lifetime.

I love crafts…scrapping, knitting, you name it. The truth is, though, that I’m more of a craft rookie so keeping up with my growing stash and projects is a little overwhelming. Since I’m working on a complete redesign of my corporate website right now, I spend a fair amount of time browsing over some of the web showcase sites for inspiration. I stumbled on one that caters to the blog-only crowd, called Lovely Blogs, run by college student Ben Bleikamp.

Lovely Blogs is a design showcase, similar to Stylegala or CSS Beauty. Unlike those two sites, the focus is 100% on blogs. Along with showcasing the best looking blogs online there will be articles teaching people how to make their blogs look lovelier – from customizing a template to using a editing a plug in to match your site.

Hopefully, we’ll see a little less overlap of the same sites on this one. Hopefully.

Something really cool just happened to me. A few weeks ago I signed up for Grist Magazine’s newsletter, Daily Grist, which is a snarky, clever look at the current environmental headlines. When I signed up, I guess it made me eligible for a $250 gift certificate from the swanky, eco-tailer Greenloop. I won. Can you believe it? I won. And I just finished my little shopping spree and am patiently awaiting my very hip loot.

Marktd is a reference system that highlights marketing articles considered valuable by the marketing community. Marketers submit articles they either write or just find on the web and other marketers vote on the value of those articles. The most popular articles reach the front page.

Has the potential to be very cool resource for marketers and other interested folks, but the abuse potential factor is pretty high, too. It’s hard for a lot of us marketing/promotional types to deny old habits and not look for a way to self promote. Another reason why going Pinko is so appealing…it lifts the burden of constantly needing to get the edge and outwit your customers/readers/clients/partners/competition.

Citizen Agency

The coiner and defacto guru of Pinko Marketing and one of my favorite bloggers, Tara Hunt, is putting together a new venture called Citizen Agency. Looks very worthy of watching….

After seeing the hot button topic of Net Neutrality pop up everywhere the intellectual wannabe in me decided to get off my butt and find out what all the hubbub was about. And now I’m a little freaked out. Why in this day and age of war and phone tapping and outed CIA agents am I still so naive to believe that some things, like the Internet, are sacred, is beyond me. Basically, telcos such as AT&T, Verizon and Comcast are lobbying Congress for control of what and how we access and view the Internet. Compaines like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are lobbying for laws that would make Net neutrality mandatory.

On a personal note, elimating net neutrality would impact my life significantly. Because of my rural location, I depend on net neutrality to run both my home and professional lives. Contrary to popular belief, it is small businesses, not big big businesses, that are the lifeblood of our struggling economy right now. Ending net neutrality would damage, if not destroy, the fragile fabric that businesses and families have built their foundations on. Ending net neutrality would essentially put me out of business.

Do you buy books online, use Google, or download to an iPod? Everything we do online will be hurt if Congress passes a radical law next week that gives giant corporations more control over what we do and see on the Internet.

Internet providers like AT&T are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network Neutrality–the Internet’s First Amendment and the key to Internet freedom. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more. BarnesandNoble.com doesn’t have to outbid Amazon for the right to work properly on your computer.

If Net Neutrality is gutted, many sites–including Google, eBay, and iTunes–must either pay protection money to companies like AT&T or risk having their websites process slowly. That why these high-tech pioneers, plus diverse groups ranging from MoveOn to Gun Owners of America, are opposing Congress’ effort to gut Internet freedom.

Snopes.com, which monitors various causes that circulate on the Internet, explained:

Simply put, network neutrality means that no web site’s traffic has precedence over any other’s…Whether a user searches for recipes using Google, reads an article on snopes.com, or looks at a friend’s MySpace profile, all of that data is treated equally and delivered from the originating web site to the user’s web browser with the same priority. In recent months, however, some of the telephone and cable companies that control the telecommunications networks over which Internet data flows have floated the idea of creating the electronic equivalent of a paid carpool lane.

If companies like AT&T have their way, Web sites ranging from Google to eBay to iTunes either pay protection money to get into the “fast lane” or risk opening slowly on your computer. We can’t let the Internet–this incredible medium which has been such a revolutionary force for democratic participation, economic innovation, and free speech–become captive to large corporations.

Politicians don’t think we are paying attention to this issue. Together, we do care about preserving the free and open Internet.
